Abstract:

This article focuses on discussion of ways to train music professionals and the development of music education models in Chinese universities. The article presents the history and development of higher music education in China, and argues that a diversifi ed education system has been established with music education in traditional professional conservatories of music, normal universities and comprehensive universities exist side by side in higher music education in China. The article also illustrates the module systems, teaching schedule, problems and confusion encountered during the past decade in the development of music education in Chinese universities, including undergraduates’ diff erent music accomplishment before entering the university, learning outcomes, module systems, and evaluation systems of education. Finally, the article proposes some recommendations and ways in identifying objectives for the training of professionals and selectively use the teaching experience gained from universities outside China for reference. At the same time, it is hoped that this article can attract the attention from international scholars to attach great signifi cance on the development of music education in universities, so that they can provide benefi cial suggestions and instructions on the training of compound music professionals in Chinese universities.
